At UCLA, your gender information is used to determine your housing assignment, including who you may be matched with as roommates.
Students are placed with others who share the same room assignment gender. Because of this, the gender identity listed in your university records directly affects your housing assignment.
How to check or update your gender
Your housing assignment is based on the gender identity listed in MyUCLA. You can update your gender identity at any time. Changes are reflected in Housing within one business day.
Below are the MyUCLA gender identity options and how they correspond to housing room assignments.
| Gender Identity via MyUCLA | Gender of Room and Roommates (Room Assignment Gender) |
|---|---|
| Woman, Transgender Woman/Trans Woman | Female |
| Man, Transgender Man/Trans Man | Male |
| Nonbinary | Nonbinary |
| Different Identity | Other |
| Decline to State* | Unknown* |
*Important: If your room assignment gender is Unknown, Housing Services cannot provide you a housing offer.
Gender inclusive housing allows you to live with roommates regardless of gender identity.
To request this option, review the Updating Gender Inclusive Response information on Ask Housing.
Important notes:
- Your gender identity is not used when assigning roommates in gender inclusive housing.
- You may be assigned roommates who have a different gender identity than you.
- All buildings are already mixed gender.
- You do not need gender inclusive housing if you want to live on a mixed-gender floor but in a single gender room.
- If you select gender inclusive housing, you can only request roommates and be assigned with others who also selected this option.
