Weyburn Terrace Transition FAQs

Why is UCLA transitioning Weyburn Terrace from graduate to undergraduate housing?
UCLA is expanding undergraduate housing to meet growing demand and to uphold the university’s four-year undergraduate and two-year transfer housing guarantees. Doing so requires higher-density housing configurations and additional undergraduate inventory. As part of this long-term plan, Weyburn Terrace will transition to undergraduate use gradually over three years. In response to this shift, UCLA purchased multiple properties to continue providing housing for graduate students.

What is the timeline for the Weyburn Terrace building transitions?
The transition will occur in phases:

  • Sycamore, Aloe, Magnolia: Vacated by June 30, 2026
  • Jacaranda, Olive, Cypress: Vacated by June 30, 2027
  • Palm & Paseo: Vacated by June 8, 2028
(No summer extension available due to the 2028 Olympics)

Residents will receive advance notice and relocation options aligned with these timelines.

How will transfers offers be made?
After the survey closes, we will review all submitted responses together and begin making housing offers based on a structured, multi-step process designed to be fair and transparent.
Step 1: Grouping by years lived in University housing
Survey submissions will first be grouped based on how many years a resident has lived in University housing:

  • Third-year residents
  • Second-year residents
  • First-year residents

Housing offers will be made in that order of priority: third year first, then second year, then first year.
Step 2: Randomized priority within each group
Within each year group, residents will be assigned a randomly generated priority number. Offers will then be made within that group based on priority order, availability, and the preferences indicated in the survey.
Step 3: Offers based on availability and preferences
As offers are made, available spaces will be matched as closely as possible to unit-type preferences indicated in the survey. Not all preferences can be guaranteed, and offers will depend on remaining availability at the time a resident’s priority number is reached.

Residents who do not complete the survey by the stated deadline will be invited to participate in a later survey and considered in a subsequent round of offers, after the initial round is completed.

Why is this the approach being used?
This approach is designed to be fair, consistent, and transparent, while recognizing the different housing needs of residents at various stages of their time in University housing.

This is the same general framework UCLA Housing uses to prioritize housing for undergraduate students, and it allows us to apply a process that is familiar, structured, and well-established across housing programs.

Am I losing my graduate housing eligibility because of this transition?
No. All current Weyburn Terrace graduate residents will retain their full three years of graduate housing eligibility.
In some cases, if summer housing is needed after a Weyburn Terrace building transitions, additional eligibility in other university-owned graduate housing communities may be offered.

Do I have to move before the end of my current lease?
No. Residents may remain in their current unit through the end of their lease term (July 1) if they are graduating or not renewing their housing contract.

If you are not renewing, you should still submit a Notice of Intent to Vacate (NITV), even if you plan to move out at the end of your contract. This helps us plan appropriately for remaining residents. Please submit the NITV via the housing portal.

We have waived the standard 30-day notice requirement. If you plan to move out earlier than July 1, please email us with your intended move-out date.

What relocation options will be available?
Relocation options may include:

  • Remaining within other Weyburn Terrace buildings, based on availability
  • Newly acquired graduate housing communities, including Venice, Berryman, and Wilshire
  • Other university-owned graduate housing locations

Will moving assistance be provided?
Yes, when transferring to another University owned housing unit, and when students select one of the pre-scheduled weeks. If the move is scheduled outside of those weeks, boxes and carts can still be provided, but we cannot guarantee shuttle or moving staff services. UCLA Housing will provide comprehensive moving support throughout the entire transition, including:

  • Free moving boxes delivered in advance
  • A scheduled one-hour moving window with staff assistance
  • Shuttle transportation between housing locations (Weyburn Terrace to South apartments)
  • On-site Housing staff during move days
  • Scheduled cart and boxes pick-up after unpacking

Moving assistance will also be available for future transitions as additional buildings phase.

How will rent and billing work if I move?
Charges will be prorated based on your move date
If you choose to terminate your contract early, rent will be prorated for the month of move-out
There is no cancellation fee. Additionally, if students want to submit a NITV, we will waive the 30 day requirement.

Will transportation and parking be impacted?
Graduate student parking availability within Weyburn Terrace will remain in the buildings that are for graduate students. Sycamore, Aloe, and Magnolia garages will convert to undergraduate parking. New graduate housing locations have limited parking.
UCLA Housing is actively working with UCLA Transportation to:

  • Expand shuttle service
  • Improve frequency
  • Explore weekend and holiday service options

Updates will be shared as transportation plans are finalized.

How does the 2028 Olympics affect Weyburn Terrace residents?
Weyburn Terrace is located within the Olympics security perimeter and will be used for athlete housing in summer 2028. As a result, no residents may remain in Weyburn Terrace buildings during summer 2028. UCLA-owned off-campus graduate housing communities are not part of Olympic housing.

Why weren’t residents notified earlier?
Housing acquisition, relocation options, timelines, and support services needed to be finalized before a comprehensive announcement could be made. UCLA Housing communicated once concrete details were available to ensure residents received accurate and actionable information.
